With 12 players at the Chula Vista Eagle camp and at least 8 more unavailable due to wedding and injuries, the Developmental side of the NYRC Women took on Boston's A side and came away victorious with a 24-15 win.
Firstly, New York would like to thank Boston for traveling down for this game after we informed them that it would be a developmental squad that they were playing against due to a lot of our player’s absence at the USA Eagle Chula Vista Camp and “Junkies” wedding in Puerto Rico. Also, a huge thanks to the Village Lions for being available to play the second game of the day against Boston’s “B” side. Both teams were class acts and played with a lot of intensity… Thank You BOSTON and The LIONS! New York Development XV 24 (14 - 07) 15 Boston “A” McCarren Park, Brooklyn, NY 11:00am, March 25, 2006

Additionally, we were lucky to have returning summer sevens veteran, Amanda Webb and her wing friend, “Jam” Madison available along with 8-Man Molly Dengler. With a couple of excellent practices focusing on the game plan and players that were to represent, New York was ready and willing to take on any opponent. The venue was awesome, the weather was great for rugby, and Boston was ready for the whistle!. Concerns of fluidity between the backs and forwards went right out the window when within the first two minutes, New York’s pack won a great line out and put together a back play that resulted in speedster Jenna Flateman inserting herself from fullback and taking the ball at pace to the try line. For the next 15 minutes Boston stopped all attacks and the game started to get a little less disciplined. Lots of knock-on’s and forward passes resulted in some stagnant play. In the 20th minute, excellent phase play put powerful Tyshawn Henry in a position to attack at pace through several tacklers for the second try. Jenny Kuchar should be commended for her excellent efforts after being thrust into the “10” jersey and kicking both conversions!. Boston never gave up an inch without effort… It was rewarded in the 34th minute with a converted try. After the half and several changes to the starting line-up, the game again became a defense one, with both sides forcing errors and neither conceding any yardage. New York center, Tyshawn Henry again was put in a position to burst through the Boston line in the 23rd minute to put New York ahead 19-7. With several more substitutions, Boston started to sniff the try line and brought the game closer with a converted Penalty kick in front of the posts and an excellent worked try by their wing in the corner to bring the game closer at 19-15. As the game was winding down to the final whistle, New York mounted an attack that had them parked within Boston’s five meter mark for the remainder of the game. Time after time Boston stopped the attack… Finally, Robin “J-Lo” O’Hare went aerial in the corner and fly in (yes I said “Aerial”) for the last points! A great start to the season for New York! Thanks again Boston and the Village Lions |
