The Gents showed up in full force on Saturday for a perhaps the greatest gathering of old boy players in Met-NY recent history at the home pitch of Monmouth RFC.
The Gentlemen of New York was one of five teams that played in a round robin that included the Morris, Monmouth, North Jersey, and the Connecticut Greys. Shortened matches let all teams play each other. In our first match, Morris bested a clearly rusty Gents side as we shook off the cobwebs and lost 15-0. Morris got off two quick tries but the Gents steadied themselves and held them scoreless in the second half. Gianni Lopez gets man of the match honors for attempting a nice drop kick in the closing seconds of the game. The kick looked great...until it went wide right. Our next game was against our sometime teammates Monmouth and while we were better, we never put the ball into the try zone. Luckily, neither did Morris and we tied 0-0. After losing to Morris, a moral victory. The third match of the day featured about half the Gents taking the field against North Jersey and while North Jersey scored twice, the lads seemed to be more focused on the sideline beers and the realization that when your're this old, three games in one day only SOUNDS like a good idea. Kudos go out to Brian Cardew, Gents NJ coordinator and Monmouth old boy who organized a great day of Old Boys Rugby. Look for a repeat performance again in the fall and spring. Our next game is home on April 15 vs the Village Lions at Randalls Island. All old boys are encouraged to attend. And anyone else who wants a home game. |
