Baltimore-Chesapeake game rained off PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 24 April 2006

Pier 40 pulled the game due to flooding of the artificial turf field, leaving a bus load of "horses" from Baltimore half an hour to the city but with no match to play. What better way to literally drown the sorrows than a 15-man boat race between the two teams in Mr Dennehys. More follows from Doc Rizzo...

The Men's team were fired up after a good week of training and motivational speeches from different members of the club, only to find the game cancelled due to flooding on the pitch. However, that did not stop the two teams from gathering at Mr Dennehy's. A brief reminiscence about Randall's Island was dismissed quickly and "play" resumed. The recipients for the Man of the Match award were as follows: For the Baltimore Brumbies one players distinguished effort was leaving his wife and children to board a train from Philly, only to to find out half way to NYC that the game was cancelled. Nevertheless, he continued on. He made this star play, a set piece, knowing it was his wife's birthday at midnight. Danny Sonon was NYMs top candidate for biking down to the pitch to check conditions, only to go awol in the gathering tides. Duncan Heilbronn accepted the award as he stayed at the pier ensuring all stragglers were accounted for and escorted them to the bar - while leaving his wife and child at home as well. The Man of the Match drink off was a tie - truly. Following that the two teams prepared for the hardware of the evening.

The visiting referee from Texas blew the whistle calling a mark for the starting 15 on each side to form a tunnel. The players lined up with a fair bit of jostling, and grumbling about the forwards needing to anchor, but in sequential order and with pints in hand waiting for the kick off. In the basement of Mr. Dennehy's a short whistle blew and the contest for the hardware began. The referee scrutinized play as the tight five were dead even heading into the loose forwards. There were shouts from the spectators about yellow carding the some of the spillage, however, the referee allowed play to continue. Baltimore's loosies proved quicker to the ball allowing their backs to open their legs. Some pace in the centers pulled it back a little for  but to no avail.

The referee announced the winner of the trophy- 27th Annual 2005 NY Sevens Women's Collegiate Champions.-The final score Brumbies-15 NYM-13.

Red cards issued later to Duncan - claiming the forwards couldn't get the ball out to the backs, and Keelan Walker- for giving wrong directions to the next pitch.

A good time, but next week will no doubt be better when we actually play.
