April 8, 2006 - Bladensburg, MD On Saturday April 8th Washington DC saw a soggy cherry blossom parade and an even soggier rugby match. Early in the morning the NY women traveled south four hours to join their teammates in battle against the Furies...
From warm-up to cool-down the artic cold, wind and rain kept the NY players and fans freezing throughout the day. Ponchos and rain coats abound, the fans saw the women start off slow, as the Furies took an early lead. The penalty kick set the Furies up by 3 but the women were not about to roll over. Despite the mud and rain the NY scrum dominated the Furies pack, and came out of every scrum to see slide marks at their counterparts feet. The back line had handling issues at first but fought their way back to offer some dangerous runs, fabulous counterattacks and plays. Lineouts were fair, but NY dominated and led by Heidi Rubenstein, disrupted much of the DC ball. Forward punches were straightened out and despite a Ref that at times seemed he had the NY women’s number, NY managed to pull ahead and score multiple tries. It was the first game back from injury for Phaidra Knight and Keenya Warner this spring, and certainly a cold one for the two who are originally from more Southerly states. At the end of the slog fest NY defended on their goal line and held DC to a 26-6 win. For the second match of the day, NY Developmental took on the Furies B-side. Despite the continuing rain and viscous cold, NY kept the pressure on and brought the field alive. While generally the rain kept the pace down, the backs scored four tries. Brafman scored ten points while Kuchar put away twelve including 4/5 conversions, leaving Lisa and a try and another hooker try from Audage! The Development Side finished up shutting DC with a final score of 33-0. The staff writer graciously begs your forgiveness in this untimely and vague report as she was “Litrully poaked in the ai” and missed much of what was going on around her.
