We went out on top, despite the score! Although the final score was something like 28-22, it was a great game of rugby for the Gents and while they finished on top, we played three hard periods of rugby...
We got in the first score and the last score. Forced them to change their game plan and kept running back at them. Man of the match has to go to the Poltroons own Bart Cuomo who lined a very well placed kick right into the hands of Matt Finnerty who scooted directly into the try zone past a proud and perhaps a bit hung over Bart. At kick-off we had 24 players and more guys showed up to get in as the game went on. This has been the best season ever of Gents rugby. We had a mix of players from New York-Manhattan, Mike Moran as always in the AC red, Monmouth, the CT Grays, and Mystic River. We posted an overall 2-2-1 record, that includes playing in the New Jersey/Monmouth round robin with a tie to Monmouth and a loss to Morris. We handily beat the Lions and had one of the best games in memory against the Grays. The Poltroons arrived for I believe their sixth game against the Gents/Les Vieux sides and we have continued a great rivalry. We played three games this season with three 30 minutes periods. Congrats to all who played. Happy 50th to John Abare, of London, Les Vieux and the Poltroons for establishing the connection. We got some new guys to join us for the first time, even Frank Romano and Buddy Wolfe and no doubt Jim Green and Jim Herschlein will encourage others to play. To quote the wordsmith Matt McCarthy, he of the bad calf... "It was a Game For The Ages (any ages) and there’s not a guy that was out there today that would disagree with this late-night, seemingly drunkenly typed note. Cheers, Bronco – somewhere out there guys like Flemister and Georgiadis and Fautley are kicking themselves. Matt, it was a pleasure." Matt and Matt are meeting for a quiet dinner later this week at some out-of-the-way location. Great season boys! More to come on Jersey Cup. See you in the fall.
