Chris "Pudge" RYAN (Coach) Press release from USA Rugby: 8-27-2006 - NORTHEAST WOMEN REPEAT AS ALL-STAR SEVENS CHAMPIONS
MILWAUKEE – The Women’s Northeast Territorial Team dominated the competition on its way to its second-straight National title Sunday at the All-Star Sevens Championships in Milwaukee, Wis. Not only did the Northeast outscore its three opponents 101-17 in pool play on Saturday, but it was able to battle through a tough semifinal game against South, winning 10-7, before shutting out the Midwest Women 21-0 in the final to secure its top spot. Northeast’s dominance is due in large part to its sense of team work and the fact that they have been able to play together most of the summer; although, individual efforts by Yancy Graf, Ines Rodriquez and Alison Price, plus the dedication of Coach Chris Ryan, didn’t hurt any. A surprise on the women’s side was the Southern California’s Territorial Team, which moved from eighth in last year’s tournament, to finish third this year, beating a talented South Team, 36-0. In fact, until this weekend, the Southern California women’s team had never won a game in this Championships five-year history. On the men’s side Southern Cal was also a surprise winner of its National Championship, overcoming what had appeared to be an unstoppable Pacific Team to win the men's All-Star Sevens title, 31-28. Pacific had won three of the last five All-Star titles, and again looked to be on top of its game at this tournament, taking the No. 1 spot in its pool and going into bracket play with only one apparent competitor on its radar, defending champion West. But, after West fell to Southern California in the semifinals, Pacific indeed had reason to worry, since SoCal had been the only competition it had met thus far, tying its territorial neighbor 12-12 in the first match of pool play. West ended up finishing in third, after crushing the Mid-Atlantic Men’s Team 40-0, while the Northeast Men took fifth by defeating the Midwest Team, 17-12. The Men’s South Team beat the Combined Services Team 39-5 for seventh place to round out the men’s tournament finishes. On the women’s side, the Mid-Atlantic Territory Team shutout the Women’s West Team 12-0 for fifth, while the Pacific Women won 27-5 over the U-23 Team in the battle for seventh.
