The NY Women took second place in the Competitive Division at Pumpkinfest 2006 this past weekend in Philadelphia, showing a lot of team heart and tenacious play throughout a weekend which saw matches against Philly, NOVA, Washington, and Beantown ...
With a depleted NEW YORK squad due to unavailability and World Cup, we traveled with 25 players and the amazing support of fellow injured teammates Sarah LITT and Stephanie PADDOCK and David (Braf’s awesome husband) and Jan (Eva’s Mom) with cooler full of food and goodies as usual! The squad was totally committed to showing that our depth is unquestionable and we can compete at any level regardless of missing some starters. Led by Captain Maura WEIKMAN, Co-Captain Katie HILL and Pack Leader Lisa LAKE, we all agreed we were going to throw everything we had into every game and see where it took us!.... Coaches Drew FAUTLEY and Chris “Pudge” RYAN set up the game plans and the team very swiftly signed on to the goals. The team played with passion, put in some phenomenal phase play and were incredibly tenacious on the defensive front. After two first day's wins against Philadelphia and NOVA, New York found themselves in the Competitive bracket semi-final. The Semi-Final against Washington was a brutal affair with Washington throwing everything they had at New York. New York showed a lot of heart to consistently stop the waves of Furie attacks. A great win put New York into the Final again against our NRU neighbors to the north, Beantown…. The game started with our opponents pressing time and time again and eventually breaking our line twice for two tries. What the crowd saw was a tenacious and admirable effort by New York consistently disrupting Beantown’s attacks. At the half, New York stepped it up one more gear and shut down Beantown who did not score or break the NY’ers line again. Instead, New York pushed them back time and time again. An incredible counter attack from NY on our ten yard line sent our top scorer for the weekend (Jenna "Bif" Flateman) away to the races with a 80 yard run that just fell short of the score. The weekend was sensational in so many ways, we recorded messages of support to our Eagles as they prepare for Australia this Tuesday, we sang, we laughed and we played fantastic rugby. Way to go New York! PICTURES OF THE WEEKEND CARE OF JAN (EVA'S MOM) Below are the details for the four games that were played…..
