Gents beat Lion Kings 12-5 on their Friends and Family Day...
It was a throwback to the old days, hard tackles, hard fought scrums, rucks and mauls, heads up back play and a game that could have gone either way until the last minutes. But in the end, the Gentlemen of New York left the field the winners over the Village Lion Kings, 12-5 Cheesy Rob scored the first try for the Gents, Kirk Miller steadied the backfield at flyhalf, Jeff Sterns showed up well before kick-off and did his usual stellar job at scrumhalf, big Bird provided us with some great field position with his awesome foot. Jim Hershlein provided steady loose forward play and Joe Bartlett proved that at 72, you can still get a run in. Although he's not their yet, Mitch Kapner decided to turn 50 by playing a game for the Gents and he proved that despite not playing since the Les Vieux Bermuda tour, he can still tackle and catch a ball. The game was tough all around. We went ahead in the first half but the Lions kept the pressure up with hard rucks and mauls and splitting the scrums. However, a second try in the second half by the Gents proved to be the backbreaker, even though the Lions scored one try to keep it close. Time ran out on the Lions but everyone agreed it was a good hard game all around. Following the game, the Lion Kings put out a spread for their friends and family day. A huge spread included more beer than we could drink, the grill constantly working and a shrimp and lobster boil. Mark us down for the party next year. Next up, Union Old Boys Oct 7 at Randalls. |
