NEW YORK Wins NORTHEAST TITLE AGAIN! Northeast Play-Offs Phoenixville, Pennsylvania October 7th-8th, 2006 Hosted by Keystone Rugby Club On a really nice weekend in Pennsylvania, New York embarked on the quest for their fifth NRU Championship in a row. Going in to the play-offs as Seed #2 was a little different and our first opponents were to be last year's USA #7, Keystone. Saturday, Oct 7 - New York (NRU#2) versus Keystone (NRU#3) The hosts of the NRU playoffs were obviously excited at the chance of presenting themselves in a better position to the National Sweet 16’s this year and were prepared well for the game after beating a depleted NY team earlier in the season. It was obvious within the first ten minutes of the game that New York had different ideas about the outcome. An early converted penalty settled NY down and an excellent back line play sending Rebecca Brafman through the defense at pace for the first try of the game opened up the gap. Hard work in the forwards and good defensive tenacity paid off and the NRU Final was in sight for NY at half time with a score of 22-03. The first twenty minutes of the second half provided an additional 18 points for New York with tries from Kristin Baja and Phaidra Knight. The next ten minutes showed all who were watching why Keystone is a force. They came back and caught NY napping twice with two well worked tries from sloppy NY defense. One try from Hedwig Aerts and an awarded penalty try on a high tackle to Rosalie MacGowan presented NY with a 50-15 win. Kudos to Keystone who played very hard until the end and to Referee, Brad “Badger” Kleiner for a great job. 01 COLLIER, Annie 02 AUDAGE, Kate (iii) 03 O’HARE, Robin (vii) 04 VIVOLO, Lara 05 BRETHEL, Katie 06 RUBENSTEIN, Heidi 07 KNIGHT, Phaidra (v) 08 McMAHON, Kelly (i) 09 KNIGHT, Lee 10 BAJA, Kristin 11 McGEE, Vanesha 12 BRAFMAN, Rebecca (ii) 13 WARNER, Keenya (iv) 14 FLATEMAN, Jenna (vi) 15 WEIKMAN, Maura Playing Reserves EPSTEIN, Jen (i) AERTS, Hedwig (ii) MacCALLUM, Katie (iii) PRICE, Alison (iv) BRUCE, Michelle (v) MacGOWAN, Rosalie (vi) FLYNN, Rachel (vii) Squad Reserves LAKE, Elizabeth JENNINGS, Masako HILL, Katie LUTTRELL, Jo Ann WEBB, Amanda LAMAN, Caitlyn Score Line 08 Minutes 03-00 BAJA – Converted Penalty 12 Minutes 08-00 BRAFMAN – Try 10-00 BAJA – Conversion 18 Minutes 15-00 WEIKMAN – Try 36 Minutes 15-00 KEYSTONE – Missed Penalty Kick 38 Minutes 20-00 KNIGHT, Ph – Try 22-00 BAJA – Conversion 40 Minutes 22-03 KEYSTONE – Converted Penalty Half Time 43 Minutes 27-03 BAJA – Try 47 Minutes 30-03 BAJA – Converted Penalty 51 Minutes 35-03 KNIGHT, Ph – Try 37-03 BAJA – Conversion 54 Minutes 40-03 BAJA – Converted Penalty 60 Minutes 40-08 KEYSTONE – Unconverted Try 62 Minutes 43-08 AERTS – Converted Penalty 64 Minutes 43-15 KEYSTONE – Converted Try 77 Minutes 48-15 MacGOWAN – Penalty Try 50-15 AERTS – Conversion Yellow & Red Cards: None for either side! Sunday, Oct 8 - New York (NRU#2) versus Beantown (NRU#1) This game lived up to the hype. So many of the athletes that took to the field in this match up play a lot of select side rugby together, however, the rivalry between both teams over the past ten years was apparent prior and during what was to be a game that any rugby fan would appreciate. Both teams played with incredible heart and passion the entire match. The referee, Jem McDowall kept the game open and let the teams play the game. The technical and physical way this game was played shows why the underfunded Northeast Union is so strong within the make-up of USA Rugby. For the first thirty five minutes, Beantown was relentless. They constantly made it their mission to disrupt NY in line-outs and structured phase play. However, Beantown could not break through NY’s incredible defense. It appeared that this was going to be a close match the whole way and NY was going to have to adjust at the half to break the deadlock. An incredible period of phase play and a dominant run by NY Rookie wing and USA Under-23 International, Vanesha McGee in the 38th minute was enough to put NY ahead going into Half Time. The Coaching Staff and Players of NY agreed on adjustments to their game plan and the second half was a totally different rugby match. NY learned their lesson from what Beantown was showing, adjusted and attacked time and time again at the Beantown wall that had worked so hard to keep NY out. Four tries and an accurate boot from Eagle Fly Half, Kristin Baja put the game away and the NRU#1 Seed firmly in NY’s pocket as they look to Kansas City and USA Sweet 16’s. Beantown should be commended for the excellent overall effort they put into such a great game, We wish them all the very best as they aim their sights towards the Sweet 16’s. 01 COLLIER, Annie 02 MacCALLUM, Katie (i) 03 LAKE, Elizabeth (ii) 04 VIVOLO, Lara 05 BRETHEL, Katie 06 RUBENSTEIN, Heidi (iv) 07 KNIGHT, Phaidra 08 McMAHON, Kelly 09 KNIGHT, Lee 10 BAJA, Kristin 11 McGEE, Vanesha 12 AERTS, Hedwig (v) 13 WARNER, Keenya (iii) 14 FLATEMAN, Jenna 15 WEIKMAN, Maura Playing Reserves AUDAGE, Kate (i) BRUCE, Michelle (ii) PRICE, Alison (iii) HILL, Katie (iv) BRAFMAN, Rebecca (v) Squad Reserves MacGOWAN, Rosalie FLYNN, Rachel JENNINGS, Masako EPSTEIN, Jen WEBB, Amanda LAMAN, Caitlyn Injured Squad Reserves (Unavailable) LUTTRELL, Jo Ann O’HARE, Robin Score Line 14 Minutes 00-03 BEANTOWN – Converted Penalty 32 Minutes 00-06 BEANTOWN – Converted Penalty 38 Minutes 05-06 McGEE – Try 07-06 BAJA – Conversion 39 Minutes 07-06 BEANTOWN – Missed Penalty Kick Half Time 50 Minutes 12-06 FLATEMAN – Try 14-06 BAJA – Conversion 59 Minutes 19-06 BAJA – Try 21-06 BAJA – Conversion 71 Minutes 26-06 FLATEMAN – Try 28-06 BAJA – Conversion 79 Minutes 33-06 McGEE – Try 35-06 BAJA – Conversion Yellow & Red Cards: None for either side!
