New York Women work out the kinks against Atlanta and prepare for Kansas City PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 16 October 2006

On a windy day away from the comfort of our regular FieldTurf field, New York hosted the Harlequins from Atlanta, a talented team ranked #4 in the nation with several eagles as part of the squad. Both teams accepted the fixture with the goal of seeing each other in a competitive environment so they could see different options and work out kinks prior to going to their respective Sweet 16 competitions...

It appeared to be a good match as the only way the two teams would meet again would be in the National Final. The field was terrible, the wind created dust clouds every time someone went to ground!... Thanks to Harlan and Becca for refereeing the three periods.

The format for the weekend was as follows: Both coaching staffs agreed that the first period would be the most competitive with both probable starting Senior squads would compete. The second period saw New York change 14 of 15 players to give the team a chance to work for their spot on the 28 person roster that will be presented at the Round of 16 in two weeks. The third period was the chance to work in NY’s development squad with the addition of some senior players that were needed for safety, as this squad was still working against Atlanta’s A side with reserves, a strong unit.

New York (Senior Squad) 19-05 Atlanta ‘A’

40 Minute Period

New York came out on fire with a quick tactical kick launched by Kristin Baja and quick pursuit by Jenna Flateman resulting in a Try for the wings efforts in the first two minutes. An entertaining clash was in order for the next 30 minutes with Atlanta rewarding their hard work with a try in the 33rd minute. New York replied quickly with probing attacks in the 34th and 39th Minute put centers Keenya Warner and Hedwig Aerts on the scoreboard to make the final score 19-05

New York (Senior Reserves) 00-10 Atlanta ‘A’

40 Minute Period

A great effort was put into this period by New York as they went up against a warmed up Atlanta team that was obviously figuring out their game. Atlanta had to work very hard for their two unconverted and unanswered try as New York kept establishing long periods of great defensive pressure.

New York (Development +) 07-07 Atlanta ‘A’ Reserves

Two 20 Minute Periods

The final action of the day showcased New York’s excellent depth as another five new players took the field surrounded by players from the previous periods to take on Atlanta’s A side plus reserves. This finale was played as passionately as the first with a lot of hard and exciting rugby for the large crowd to enjoy. Near the end of the first twenty minute period New York gave the ball to outstanding veteran prop, Lisa Lake who actually got the ball popped out of her hands in a hard tackle only to have Katie Hill right there to put it down in the try zone for a go ahead try. The Harlequins came back in the last period of the day with a good try to even up the last session.

A great effort by both teams on a blustery day…. Thanks to ATLANTA for making the trip and a special thanks to the New Yorkers that hosted them.
