In a much changed lineup from last spring, and missing both James Lik and Brian Fitzgerald who are trying their hands at Super League level, NYM avenged 3 losses to Union last year with A and B-side wins at Randalls Island on Saturday.
Saturday March 10th 2007, Randalls Island field 17. NYM vs Union County Mudturtles RFC Weather: Sunny, turning cloudy later; Going: Good to very soft. A-side W 29 – 21. NYM hosted at Randalls Island for the first time in a while and the pitch (field 17 with the rugby posts) was surprisingly soft, especially in the middle. This made for a much slower game than we were used to at Pier 40. Considering the disruption in training due to the weather NYM started brightly and while the lineout remains a source of frustration the scrum was solid and open play honest. Andy Boon had an impressive debut for NYM on the openside flank, until he ran out of gas, and it was good to see Brian Dosi and Ryan McElduff back from lengthy injury absences and in form. Mike Bury stepped up a level to complete the back row unit and although he made a few errors and was sin-binned for his efforts he showed much desire. Charlie Rizzo prompted from scrum half and was lively while when the ball went to hand to the backs showed decent skills but need improvement to be more clinical. Brian Eastman was excellent at the back, preventing many one-on-one breaks with textbook tackles and coming into the line with impeccable timing when needed. The A-side was: 1. Andrew Mezo (Fyfe 60'), 2. Pete Galen, 3. Ryan McElduff, 4. Ben Whitney (), 5. Mike McNeil, 6. Mike Bury, 7. Andy Boon (Scott Crafton 50'), 8. Brian Piantedosi, 9. Charlie Rizzo, 10. Dave Elwell (c), 11. Danny Sonon, 12. Dave Moylan, 13. Richie Richardson, 14. Devon St Louis (Pat Schaal 65'), 15. Brian Eastman. Scorers. Tries: Pete Galen, Andy Boon, Richie Richardson, Danny Sonon, Brian Piantedosi. Cons: Dave Elwell (2). Man of the Match: Brian Eastman.
B-side W 34 – 0. The B-side took the field led by a couple of vets in Birdie, Drew and Matt Smith, blending their guile with the enthusiasm of our newer members. Unions numbers were bolstered by a number of young guys from Iona College, brought down by Matt Persanis their coach, and NYM forwards coach. Matt and Drew got in on the points as did Saad Cecil, continuing his fine form from last year with two tries, and Leandro at scrum half. NYM battled hard against the exhuberant youngsters and managed to keep them tryless in a great defensive display, by controlling the match. Scorers. Tries: Matt Smith, Drew Fautley, Saad Cecil (2), Leandro Machado. Cons: Matt Smith (3). Pens: Matt Smith. Man of the Match: Saad Cecil.
