On a beautifully sunny day on Randalls Island NYM "A" took on NYAC "B", their RSL squad playing in Dallas. In recent years this spring fixture has been a close contest with NYM just pipping NYAC. This time however, with the effects of a more settled and talented coaching team of Gianni Lopez and John Adelaine to the fore, NYM turned it on to win 40-23. NYM "B" then took on the Village Lions "B" who had stepped into the breach after Montclair State University pulled from the game. NYM won a gritty and niggly game 7-5.
Saturday April 21st 2007: NYM "A" 40 vs NYAC "B" 23 Randalls Island field 26 K.O. 1pm Sunny.
In the A game vs NYAC B NYM were again undeersized in the pack but proved to be fitter and adjusted better to the heat, the mercury hitting a balmy 79F on the day. Through hard rucking and tackling, apart from a 20 miute period where everyone seemed to want a rest at the same time, NYM imposed themsleves on NYAC. Danny Sonon continued his fine form this spring with 3 tries, banging them in through the defense rather than around it. Brain Eastman again got through a tireless amount of work and was also rewarded for his efforts in crossing the line twice. The backs are really starting to gel, and while there is still work to do the effort is paying off. Many of the forwards had great games, working tirelessly in the heat to get to rucks ahead of their opposite man and keep the pace of the game up to work to our advantage, particularly flankers Andy Boon and Bastien Galand. There were some defensive lapses though, that allowed the big, well-drilled runners of NYAC through but NYM more than matched them and ran out winners in the end. NYM "B" 7 vs Village Lions "B" 5 In a hastily arranged match the Village Lions B side filled our fixture hole. The match was a fairly gritty and dour affair with both sides scoring one try apiece, the difference being the conversion for NYM. Big thanks for the Village Lions for the game and for their hospitality afterwards!
