All-American in fact. There is no disputing NYM team member Sean Danahy's patriotism on this July 4th in that shirt. However, it is his brother Patrick, pictured with him in white, who made the All-American Collegiate team barely 6 months after first picking up a rugby ball with any real intent.
Pat went to Stanford to earn a spot on the football team at tight end, however injuries and the coaches decision to "look to the future" in his final year saw his game time decrease. He was enventually cajoled into trying rugby by some of his friends who were on the Stanford rugby team, using their upcoming tour to Ireland as bait. Since then it has been a metoric rise through gaining invitations to play in Ireland, Pac Coast Grizzly Collegiate selection, to the All-American touring team. Sean recently visited Toronto's Flecthers Fields to see him win his first cap against Canada U21s. Pat was summoned from the bench in the second half and capped off his day with a debut try. "I went f-ing nuts" said Sean, as his brother stripped the ball from the carrier to score. Sean has been a proud and vocal supporter of the Pat Danahy fan group to anyone that will listen. So, an All-American sweep of the Candian U21s in July 4th week, and a Danahy involved to boot. Couldn't have asked for more (except maybe for the oppositon to have been England, and the score to have remained the same!). |
