The New York Rugby Club women beat the Emerald City Mudhens 67-10 in the first round and followed that up with a 30-7 win against Keystone in the second to qualify for the USA Rugby National Championship Finals in Sanford, FL on Nov 9-11...
NEW YORK… Two steps closer! USA National Club Sweet 16’s Burr Fields - Austin, TX October 27-28, 2007 After experiencing the usual flight delay and cancellations, the New York Women assembled (albeit tired) in Austin for our first of two games in the National Sweet 16’s. Our first game would determine if we were going to return to Florida, and the second would place us in the Championship or Plate Championship bracket. Saturday, October 27, 2007 - NEW YORK WOMEN 67-10 Emerald City Mudhens Pictures care of Dropkick Photos Even though many of our players arrived to the team hotel as late as 4:30am on game day, the team rallied and had a great warm-up prior to the 1:30pm kick-off against the Pacific Coast 3rd Seed and USA 16th Seed. The game started with a flurry of great moves, strong runs and support play and a half time score of 39-00 in the Orange and Blue column. The start of the second half was no different, New York put together some brilliant play in this one sided match. Kristin Baja slotted through a rarely seen Drop Goal to start off the half and Knight, Henry and Carlson ran in some nice tries. However, NY got too familiar being the aggressor and the Mudhens worked really hard near the end of the match to grab two nice consolation tries to finish the match. Before leaving the game half way through the second half, Tyshawn Henry notched up her fourth try of the game. Phaidra Knight was a one woman wrecking crew placing a hatrick in the records and wing Twiggs Carlson logged two tries. A great team effort by all 22 players that took the field and the awesome reserves and traveling members that hydrated and cheered our team. 01 COLLIER, Annie (Capt) 02 BRUCE, Michelle 03 DuBRAY, Carrie 04 VIVOLO, Lara 05 FLYNN, Rachel 06 RUBENSTEIN, Heidi 07 KNIGHT, Phaidra 08 BRETHEL, Katie 09 CAMPBELL, Kristen 10 BAJA, Kristin 11 CARLSON, Tanya 12 BUSSMAN, Jenna 13 PRICE, Alison 14 HENRY, Tyshawn 15 WEIKMAN, Maura Playing Reserves DuGOFF, Eva McMAHON, Kelly AERTS, Hedwig LLOYD, Fontaine MacGOWAN, Rosalie O’HARE, Robin PADDOCK, Stephanie Non-Playing Reserves MacCALLUM, Katie DAVIS, Jenny DENGLER, Molly LITT, Sarah FLATEMAN, Jenna VanDerHOOP, Heather Scoreline 05 Min 05-00 Try by Phaidra Knight 07-00 Conversion by Maura Weikman 12 Min 12-00 Unconverted Try by Tyshawn Henry 14 Min 17-00 Unconverted Try by Michelle Bruce 18 Min 22-00 Unconverted Try by Carrie DuBray 25 Min 27-00 Try by Phaidra Knight 29-00 Conversion by Maura Weikman 33 Min 34-00 Unconverted Try by Tyshawn Henry 36 Min 39-00 Unconverted Try by Maura Weikman Half Time 46 Min 42-00 Drop Goal Converted by Kristin Baja 50 Min 47-00 Unconverted Try by Phaidra Knight 51 Min 52-00 Unconverted Try by Tyshawn Henry 56 Min 57-00 Unconverted Try by Tyshawn Henry 65 Min 62-00 Unconverted Try by Tanya Carlson 71 Min 67-00 Unconverted Try by Tanya Carlson 74 Min 67-05 Unconverted Try by Mudhens 71 Min 67-10 Unconverted Try by Mudhens Full Time Northeast “Motley” Game versus Texas A&M Right after we played our game, Beantown had organized a game made up of traveling team members and squad reserves to take on a rising college powerhouse. The first half saw the college athletes really open up the mixed side of Beantown and Keystone guest players. At half time, the New Yorkers took the field and put together some great phases of rugby with their Northeast comrades. Our athletes were: Helen “R2” Miesner Playing at Outside Center Sarah “Slitty” Litt Scrum Half (“El Generale”) Heather “Hoops” VanDerHoop Fullback (Catching High balls everywhere!) Molly Dengler Front Row (The Magnificent One) Jenny Davis Flanker (All over the field) Our ladies all played awesome and really made a difference. Very proud! Social Event The entire team pulled out all the stops in great 007 Black costumes and wigs that received confused looks from the Univ. of Texas football supporters at a Texas Steakhouse. A great rookie show, great entertainment and loads of laughs put the team in great spirits for the next day! Sunday, October 28, 2007 - NEW YORK WOMEN 30-07 Keystone Griffins Pictures care of Dropkick Photos Traveling all the way to TX to play an NRU opponent is not ideal, but that was the task of the day to put NY in the Final Four again. It was obvious that Keystone was not the team it was at the beginning of the NRU league season and was out to spoil the day doing a fantastic job of disrupting us early and often. After ten minutes of to and fro pressure and probing kicks, NY mauled a great try over from a lineout to start the scoring. Keystone replied with a well worked play to go ahead 5-7 in the 23rd minute. The forwards decided to take Keystone to task and put in two tries by Phaidra Knight near the end of the first half to put the scoreboard at 15-7. In the final half, New York made very good adjustments and continued to punish the Griffins for competing strongly for every ruck leaving small gaps that NY capitalized on. Early tries by Tanya Carlson and Kristin Baja (Playing with a sprained AC shoulder joint) put the score strongly in NY’s favor. A late mauling try dotted down by standout forward Katie “Animal” Brethel (her second of the game) finished the scoring. 01 COLLIER, Annie (Capt) 02 LLOYD, Fontaine 03 DuBRAY, Carrie 04 VIVOLO, Lara 05 BRETHEL, Katie 06 RUBENSTEIN, Heidi 07 KNIGHT, Phaidra 08 McMAHON, Kelly 09 CAMPBELL, Kristen 10 BAJA, Kristin 11 FLATEMAN, Jenna 12 AERTS, Hedwig 13 PRICE, Alison 14 HENRY, Tyshawn 15 WEIKMAN, Maura Playing Reserves MacCALLUM, Katie CARLSON, Tanya BRUCE, Michelle VanDerHOOP, Heather Non-Playing Reserves DAVIS, Jenny O’HARE, Robin PADDOCK, Stephanie DENGLER, Molly LITT, Sarah BUSSMAN, Jenna DuGOFF, Eva FLYNN, Rachel MacGOWAN, Rosalie Scoreline 13 Min 05-00 Unconverted Try by Katie Brethel 23 Min 05-07 Converted Try by Keystone 32 Min 10-07 Unconverted Try by Phaidra Knight 37 Min 15-07 Unconverted Try by Phaidra Knight 38 Min ** Yellow Card (Offside) Keystone Half Time 46 Min 20-07 Unconverted Try by Tanya Carlson 53 Min 25-07 Unconverted Try by Kristin Baja 70 Min ** Yellow Card (Offside) Keystone 75 Min 30-07 Unconverted Try by Katie Brethel Full Time Sweet 16 – Team Overview So we had a successful weekend and we had fun. We had a great crew of non-squad members who supported us incredibly. We had family members, friends and mates from other teams support us as we did them!. The Northeast had a great showing with Beantown and New York going into the Final Four and playing each other and Keystone shooting for the Plate.
