Nick Baker is NYM's October Player fo the Month for his unrelenting battles in the back row! He took time from his 24h work day as a big shot lawyer to briefly sit down and talk to me.
[Ed] How, why, and when did you start playing rugby? [NB] I started playing when I was five years old. I have no idea why, probably to keep off the mean streets of Eastbourne. [Ed] What brought you to NYM? [NB] The 1 train. [Ed] What motivates you on and off the field? [NB] Not letting my team-mates down is my main motivation. There's nothing more depressing than coming off the field thinking you've let the boys down. [Ed] Who is your favorite rugby player and why? [NB] All Black flanker, Michael Jones. He reinvented openside in the 80s then went on to be one of the top blindsides in the 90s. He was close to the complete player, size, speed and a huge tackler. [Showing your age there Nick!] [Ed] Most valuable teammates: [NB] Anyone filling the hooker position and keeping me out of the front row. Mainly Pete Galen who has been uncompromising all season. [Ed] Most difficult opposing team: [NB] In New York its White Plains who have a very sharp backline, but generally, every club and school I've played for has had a bad relationship with the local Marist/Catholic opposition. There's nothing forgiving about how they play. [Ed] Most respected player in the same position: [NB] A tie between Dosi for his inspirational and heart-felt team speeches and Boon for his Halloween party. [Giving out love to your back-row mates eh!] [Ed] Tell us a funny rugby story: [NB] No story, straight to bed. A pretty fit ending there, especially if you know that Nick goes straight to work from training, and sometimes games. |
