NYM were paced in the forwards this fall by Peter Galen, whose never-say-die attitude and commitment were recognized by the coaches. He took some time out of his hectic schedule to talk to me...
[Ed] How, why, and when did you start playing rugby? [PG] I started in college. The rugby table was right next to the club soccer table and the rugby guys looked like they were having more fun. [Ed] What brought you to NYM? [PG] The girlfriend (now wife) Brucie plays for the New York women so when I moved up here, it was a natural choice. I think her she said if I went to play for NYAC, it was over. [Ed] What motivates you on and off the field? [PG] On the field, I always want to outplay my opposite number and for me that usually comes from fitness. So that's what pushes me to train on my own and in the off season. [Ed] Who is your favorite rugby player and why? [PG] Neil Back, england flanker known for saying "If you're good enough, you're big enough." [Ed] Most valuable teammates: [PG] The whole blue squad. Those are the guys who I trained with and played with all season, and as a unit, I think made the biggest improvement from season beginning to end. I have to single out Andy Boon who is one of those guys who plays until he drops. I think we all improved by playing with him this season. [Ed] Most difficult opposing team: [PG] It seemed like everyone had our number this season, but I think that's going to start changing real soon. [Ed] Most respected player in the same position: [PG] Sean Fitzpatrick of the All Blacks. He put his mind to being the best #2 in the world and trained until he got there. [Ed] Tell us a funny rugby story: [PG] I once quit my job so could go play at Cape Fear. It'll be even funnier when I do it again. |
