NYM played Old Blue at their Columbia University Soccer Stadium field on Saturday March 1st. After a blizzard blew in from the west to disrupt the warm up sunny skies reappeared for the game. NYM came away with two losses but fought hard in both games.
The difference in the A-side game was Old Blue's back three, who were a threat with the ball in hand. NYM were down 17-0 after 20 minutes but dominated the rest of the first half and pulled back to 17-6 by halftime. However, rather than capitalizing on any momentum NYM gifted Old Blue some easy chances that they converted in the second half. NYM did make inroads of our own though, particularly through blindside Sam MacKenzie, openside Nick Baker, and centers Matt Venzin and Richard Richardson. Flyhalf Dan Bowen sparked our first try when he ran back around a ruck to provide wing James Dawson with a scoring pass, while a nice handling move down the backline brought Saad Cecil into play, who stood up his winger and went inside him to score. Both went unconverted from wide out. Final score was 16-41 to Old Blue, with rustiness showing our lack of match practice.
Team: 1. Andre La Morgia, 2. Pete Galen, 3. Nick Mastrogeorgiou (Mike Annicelli 40 mins, Brian Tyler, 55 mins), 4. Cody Eckstein, 5. Brian Piantedosi, 6. Sam MacKenzie, 7, Nick Baker, 8. Trevor Cassidy, 9. Ed Brydon, 10. Dan Bowen, 11. James Dawson, 12. Matt venzin (C), 13. Richard Richardson, 14. Saad Cecil, 15. Dave Elwell. Tries: Dawson, Cecil. Pens: Elwell (2). Man of the Match: Sam MacKenzie. The B-side fought a great game with many players used, it being difficult to get the full squad into play for significant time. Standouts on the day were Andy Burns at lock/flanker, Dylan Garner took his try very well after a pass from Sean Danahy, Arnold Chavis scooted round the blinside from a scrum to go in at the corner, and newcomer Simon Salgado had some forceful charges playing in an unusual position for him at wing. Despite the encouraging play a mad momant at the end let the Old Blue winger run round the entire team to score in the dying moments, sealing a win for them in a tight match. Final score was 15-25 to Old Blue. Tries: Dylan Garner, Arnold Chavis, Ryan McGarrity. Man of the Match: Dylan Garner. |
