NYM took on Union County on Saturday in the last regular game of the MET D1 season at McCarren Park, Brooklyn. Torrential rain that came and went throughout the match made ball handling difficult and the ref's prediction of the many scrums to come during the day was accurate.
In our first outing at McCarren Park, a turf field in the middle of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, there were some teething problems setting up the field which lead to a slightly late start. However, this did not put NYM off and they matched Union's bigger pack in the loose exchanges. Playing with the wind and rain in the first half NYM were committed in defence and attack. Dan Bowen's boot contributed 6 points in the half, with Union missing their only chance on a penalty. In the second half NYM snuffed out any Union attacks and played percentage rugby to keep they at bay. Some more enterprising attacks saw Cody Eckstain and Nikolai Mynhardt go close before Dave Elwell burrowed his way over. He was unable to convert his own try. It was really a day for the forwards and they stepped up. Final score NYM 11 - Union 0

Try: Elwell, Pens: Bowen (2) Man of the Match: Andre La Morgia and Ed Brydon (shared) The B-side again put on a good display despite going down in the atrocious weather in a truncated match due to the fact many of Union's A-side players had to play in the second game. NYM also had a few players playing out of position such as Scott Crafton in the centers. Justice Hampton had a strong outing at fullback in his first game for NYM while Alex Dumistrescu played well at center and Angel Rodriguez won the Man of the Match award for forceful play from flanker. Thanks to all those who came out to play, set up the field and watch! The post-game social and Williamsburg bar crawl afterwards were a lot of fun! |
