Gents kick off season at the Old Boys Festival The Gents of NY defeated cross state rivals the Connecticut Greys 5-0 in their first game of the spring season. As always between these two sides, the game was tight, well played, featured just the right about of banter and aggression but in the end, The Greys, despite their usual strong contingent, couldn't overcome the deft play and sure feet of fullback Jarl Ginsberg, who scored the games winning and only try...
For the first time in eight years, NYRC President John Truehart took to the field as both a prop and a hooker and tested out his new hip. By all accounts his game picked right back up where it left off...sorry to say it John but the hip didn't improve your play, and was able to get to the bar safely. John McCrudden, donned the Gents jersey for the first time after a five year layoff. The fomer Les Vieux standout second row was back in the thick of it, tackling and covering the field with the same smile he wore back in his younger days. In the second game against a new Rockland Old Boys team, the Gents played to a 0-0 tie. Had Matt McCarthy gained some speed we would have won that one too as Matt had a clear breakway and try in his hands but for slow feet he was chased down from behind and stopped at about the 10 meter line. Clint Tomlinson wins the Man of the Match honors for trying harder to run and score than anyone else, but unfortunately his efforts didn't match the scoreboard. This was the fourth year of the Old Boys Spring Festival organized by the Gents and Brian Cardew and the Monmouth old boys, Gents all. In addition to the Gents, Monmouth, Ct Greys, Rockland other teams included the Caribbean Cougars, South Jersey, Morris and All Japan. A mixer was held afterwards at the Monmouth clubhouse the Wild Rover where Monmouth keep the refreshments coming. Great hosts as always. The Gents play next at Inwood Park in Manhattan.
