Women take limited crew to Chicago and pull off rugby marathon!

A tour party of 22 left New York to return a match we owed Chicago North Shore from Spring 2006 at Kaiser Park, Coney Island. Although 22 and our Head Coach flew to Chicago, we only had twenty players available to play. The rain threatened all day, but we got lucky and the day was long for our limited squad, but enjoyable all the same...

The format had changed several times as both Chicago teams (Chicago North Shore and Chicago Women) both wanted a piece of the Orange and Blue. The final decision was to be two shortened games against both Chicago teams (2 Games of 2 x 30 Minutes, a total of two hours of competition).

Our first opponent was to be Chicago North Shore with ex-NY’er Tanya “Twiggs” Carlson lining up against us on the wing. This strong team in Yellow and Green was to come out hard and not stop until the final whistle. The New Yorkers had to overcome some tough and inconsistent calls in the beginning of the match, but had figured out the opposition and the ref’s style to end up winning with a shut out of 19-0. The only try in the first half was by Prop Annie Collier who rumbled from the 22 through the fringe defense and did not stop until the try line (“WOW”). After the half, New York started to control most of the set play and was rewarded by a push over scrum try dotted down by Stephanie Paddock. The final try of the game was worked well with “Captain for the day” Hedwig Aerts. A special day for some of the long time New Yorkers as this was the venue of their first major triumph, winning the USA National Club Plate Championship in 1999. Hats off to the North Shore ladies for hosting and making us feel so welcome!

With tired legs and one hour of rugby under our belts, we stepped up to the challenge of the up and coming Chicago Women team that were definitely jacked up for the competition (kind of forgetting the fact their competition was already fatigued). With respect, the Chicago Women came out hard and really made it a battle early and often. It took a lot for the Orange and Blue to summon inner strength and the tactics to turn around an early 3 point lead from the boot of Chicago’s #12. We turned the game from an interior battle to an outside speed-fest. Utilizing Jenna Flateman, Maura Weikman and Tanya “Twiggs” Carlson (on loan), we entered into the last few minutes of the game up 19-3. Special thanks to our fill in Hooker from North Shore “Z” who really played hard once she replaced Molly Dengler who got cut.
