Friends and Family Day

Saturday, 11a kick off.

Gents v Poltroons and Gents v Michigan Alumni

This is our annual Friends and Family Day. This year we have two opponents, first our long time nationwide rivals, the Old Poltroons of Vail, Washington, Boston and London. Gent Jeff Sterns and Ref Badger are bringing the Michigan Alumni to town for an old boys game. WE HAVE TWO GAMES. That means plenty of rugby for all. It will likely be the old boy round robin old boy 20 minute period format with everyone able to get in as much rugby as they want. Join your friends and bring your family.

Food and drink will be there for all...

The game is being played at Inwood Park http://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/inwoodhillpark This is way up on the upper tip of Manhattan, 214th Street and Dykeman Street off the West Side Highway. The A and the 1/9 Trains go there too. Google Inwood Hill Park and click on Map it if your are lost. Parking is tight so plan on driving around a bit before you find a place to park.

Last week we played Morris with except for three guys, an all forwards team featuring a number 8 and a prop at the center, at least until Clint arrived. Durnin was in his usual position of wingforward/flyhalf and actually made one nice kick. Overall, we played well when we held on but as we had props on the wings and in the centers, one good break was good enough for a try. We shook off the early game mistakes and settled in for a good hard game, keeping the game close, at one point we were only down one try but again, a bad pass and a quick break by real backs iced it for Morris and we wound up on the bottom half a a winnable game by a final score of I’ll call it 29-17.

Welcome back to Kevin McManus who jumped in at prop and is going to be picking up some stick-um before next week. Mark Santus had the hardest job of ordering around forwards at the wing, ok maybe Kathy did watching kids. And John McCrudden proved he’s not too old and Wanda has now attended more games this year than in her previous ten years of rugby. The loose forwards featured the formidable line up of Bud Wolfe, Jim Green and Chris Durnin proved your never too old to hit hard and run fast…ok pretty fast. Thanks to Terry from the Village Lions who was able to talk to the newest Gent and fellow Frenchman Laurant who ran off the field after filling in handily on the wing and then in the tradition of the French got directly on a plane for Paris. Ole. There is a rumor that Bob Meyer may show up for one last run before he officially retires. His number 60 was retired about 13 years ago, it may be time for his body to retire too.

This is the last official Gents game of the season. Make this one Gents. See you at 10:30a. Be on time.

Confirm early and often.

One last old boys opportunity this spring:

May 24th 11:30a, on-time start at Monmouth of NJ vs Monmouth of Wales, Old Boys. A touring old boys game will be played at the Monmouth field and of course drinks to follow at the Wild Rover. If you want to get one more game in, this is your chance.

Please confirm prior to each game. Updates at www.newyorkrugby.com and then go to old boys

Cheers,
