Write-up a little delayed, but better late than never! NYRC's first game was against Boston, and while both teams decided to mix it up, using a variety of players with different levels of experience, NYRC came away with a well-defined victory, winning 41-0. Tries were scored by both forwards and backs, and the linking of the backs and the forwards in the open field so early in the season was indicative of great things to come over the weekend...
After some stormy weather and some drenching rain, the NYRC women took on Beantown "B," Beantown having decided to rest their "A" side players in preparation for the final the next day. Again NYRC combined players of all levels of experience on the pitch and came away with a well-fought 19-0 victory over a very determined Beantown side. NYRC ended the day having accomplished our pre-set team goals – we were 2-0, and every active player had gotten game time. Saturday night found most of the team at the Lake Placid Ben & Jerry's, refueling after a hard day's work. At 9:30 AM on Sunday the team gathered at the "Bowl" for the 11 AM final against Beantown, dressed in their orange Sunday gear. This would be the second of six potential meetings with Beantown over the course of the fall season. An incredibly physical game from the opening whistle, Beantown took an early 3-0 lead on a penalty kick by Kelly Seary. The loose style of the South African referee at the breakdowns lead to a lot of messy ball, and put a lot of pressure on the scrumhalves from both sides. Much of the game was played in the middle of pitch, as both teams were battling each other to a standstill. NYRC managed to keep Beantown out of the try zone despite being down to 14 women towards the end of the second half. In the closing minutes, NYRC had a scrumdown in the Beantown 22, which the steady pack secured handily. The ball made its way out to Jenna Flateman on the wing, who used her speed to beat her defender around the corner and score the winning try. NYRC held off a determined Beantown for another two minutes before kicking the ball into touch to win their first Saranac tournament ever! Final Score: NYRC 5 – Beantown 3 |
