Despite the clouds, rain, and cool temperature on Saturday, about 22 women came out to play for the club and put together a fantastic outing at Rockaway. We had two solid teams, appropriately named for the jerseys each wore, and the NY Barbarians and NY Champions made it through the 6 pool play games with a record of 5-0-1...
Into the quarterfinals went both teams, with the Barbarians receiving a bye, while the Champions had to wait in the pouring rain to play their match because of tournament scheduling issues. Once on the field, the Champions came out on fire with excellent defense and ball control and solidly beat a water-logged Long Island team, 28-0. The win for the NY Champions meant they would face the NY Barbarians in the semi-finals, and New York won the match, without stepping onto the field. Two and a half hours later, around 4:45 pm, the merged team of Barbs and Champs took the field for the final against the Village Lions. After such a long delay, NY came out a little flat-footed and a speedy Village Lions’ player broke through the NY line on the first kickoff for the first score of the match. New York woke up quickly, though, and after some solid ball possession and excellent scrummaging, scored under the posts to make it 7-5, New York. New York added another try before the half to make it 14-5. After half-time, the Lions scored again to make it 14-10, but that was as close as they would get, as New York touched down two more tries and booted through two conversions to make the final score 28-10, New York. It was a great day to be a member of the NYRC, as everyone who came out played hard in the miserable weather. Both teams progressed throughout the day and by the final two games, New York was playing some very good 7s. The Rockaway tournament helped us move from 15s mode into 7s mode, and everyone who was there has much to be proud of, including the victory that was achieved by everyone in orange and blue. Thanks to those of you who came out to play or help out on Saturday. We couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you, and in classic NYRC style, we won it FOR THE CLUB! write up graciously provided by player-coach Jodie van Meat NYRC represented by: Fontaine, Phaidra, Maria, London, Rosalie, Jodie, Heather, Emily, Lacy, Kaitlin, Yoshia, MSG, Noelia, Nawal, Maira, Julissa, Lisa, Jesse, Jillian, Angelina, Erica, Erin, Sasha, Rachel, Laura, Judy and 4 friends.
