The Gents of NY continued to win as they defeated both Long Island and the Village Lion Kings...
Gents of NY 26 – Long Island – 12
Gents of NY 18 – Village Lions – 5 Ok, I am not sure about those scores, but we beat both teams in total points and while Long Island might have played a tougher last period, overall, we won. Since I can’t come up with the official scores, I think I am pretty close. So let me recap to the best of my memory. First for the first time in several years Long Island was able to put together an old boys side and showed up to begin their renaissance at Randall’s Island, thanks to Dr. Gareth Brancano. They jumped out to a quick lead in the first 20 minutes against the Village Lions and then it was our turn. Ok, I have no idea who scored anymore. But I do know that we jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back. The “Where did my Hands Go” Award goes to Matt “Murphy” McCarthy who dropped at least one and some would argue two sure tries. He did manage to put one in the try zone finally, but he could have done more, so much more. I think Drew Fautley scored one and I would bet that Kevin Fagan scored one. If I’m wrong, someone show me the stat sheet. Gianni Lopez had a chance to score with his foot, but according to Gianni, when you are playing with a brand new ball its much harder to kick so he wasn’t the kicking machine he usually is. I think he made his last kick however. We played the Village Lions in the second 20 and once again, showed them that we are the pride of NYC old boys pretty much handling them easily with good back movement and tight pack play. The final 20 against Long Island was a different story, Luckily we had a pretty commanding lead and while they outscored us is in the final period, we had more total points and an overall win. From the sidelines, we looked kinda flat and uninspired, but hey a win’s a win. So this week we take on White Plains. Some of us actually play with White Plains in tournament play but its been a long long time since White Plains showed up at Randalls for a one on one match against the Gents or Les Vieux or New York for that matter. So let’s remind them that while they may have had some great tournament wins, one on one, the team that became the Gents still own them on Randall’s. Kick off is once again at 11a. If you missed the news, 7’s will be an event in the 2016 Olympics and New York’s own Phadra Knight was on the morning shows to show them what an international 7s player looks like. See you Saturday. Cheers
