NYRC took on Old Blue for the MetNY D1 Championship this weekend. Despite going into the half 0-15 down and conceding another early try in the second half to make it 0-22 NYRC fought back to 19-22. through tries from Jamie Bouloux, Harold DeLucia and wing Carlon Fitzpatrick. A chargedown try to Old Blue looked like it would break the spirit of the team but they came back up the field to score a penalty by Matt Venzin before throwing the tank at Old Blue for the final five minutes only to come up short. It was a great effort though and NYRC now look towards November 14th when we will host the #3 team from NERFU in the crossover playoffs for a place in the round of 32 in the spring. More details after the jump.

DEVELOPMENTAL SQUAD REPORT by Lawrence "Junior" Blaber Jr "30% of people know that you can use statistics to back up anything?" - Homer Simpson The preceding quote was not used to make light of the Devo game, but to strengthen (be it amusingly) the belief that stats don't always tell the whole story. The stat in this instance was the scoreboard which read 26-20 to Old Blue "B". The scoreboard may have said one thing but the body language of the two teams were vastly different. Men's Head Coach Drew Faultley could be overheard reminding the Devo guys of how they walked off "chest out, head up off the field, while Old Blue walked off in a direct opposite manner, because you guys played like winners today." The history of this rivalry promised to make the match a physical affair and from opening kick off to final whistle, that promise was kept. The first try went to OB as they went out wide to their right and found some room to overload the NYRC winger, the ball was then shifted inside with a couple of passes and dotted down by the posts, conversion made. NYRC answered back with a great power run by flanker and forward MotM Chacon-Teran. Chacon got a soft pass from scrummie Ed Brydon and broke tackles as muscled his way to the try line from a few yards out. Old Blue responded with two tries in a 10 minute span. A well placed kick and chase with nifty passing lead to the first of the two. The second try occurred due to a communication break down in the NYRC defense as the defenders flooded the overloaded openside of the field after a ruck and Old Blue attacked short side with heavy numbers. NYRC FB and backs MotM Web Schelble in his second game for the team, kicked a penalty goal heading towards the end of the half to make it 21-10. Old Blue looked to try and take a stranglehold of the game in the second half. Old Blue was able to grind out a well earned try through some crash balls and a maulling. They managed to crash over and take a 26-10 lead. NYRC took control of the game from there on. NYRC scored from a superb run by Ed Brydon, who looped around returning substitute wing Casey Mizzone to recieve a pass and took it down the line to dot it down in the left hand corner, conversion missed. Rumors that Brydon may have lost a step seemed to have been exaggerated with that run. With the score at 15-26 flyhalf Ryan Juliano dived over the tryline on the right after NYRC was planted inside the Old Blue 10 meter for 10 phases. With NYRC Devo having the momentum and clearly smelling blood in the water, the game came to a frustrating end. Frustating because prior to kickoff, the teams had agreed to play a 40 minute first half and 30 minute second. Asst. Coach Junior Blaber was quoted as saying "We didn't lose, we ran out of time. With 10 more minutes we would have taken them."
