NYRC didn't produce a vintage display but still got past a skilled and committed Amoskeag side to reach the playoffs next spring. Spurred on by first half tries from Jamie Bouloux and Ollie Vega NYRC did enough in the second half to win 18-12. NYRC will compete in the NRU D1 seeding round next weekend at Randall's Island against Mystic River, NERFU #1 and winners over MetNY #4 Morris, on Saturday 11/21. The other match will be Old Blue (MetNY #1) vs New Haven (NERFU #2). On Sunday the winners and losers of Saturday's matches play off against each other to determine the seeding order of the NRU teams to MARFU #1-4 in the spring. More Amoskeag match details to follow soon.
November 14th 2009 @ 1pm Randall's Island South, Field 74 Weather: Drizzle, Field: Turf On a really dreary day, New York hosted a young and talented Amoskeag team that drove down from Manchester, New Hampshire in force. A fantastic crowd cheered for the lads in blue, white and orange as they took the field just as the rain started to pour again. New York pressed the Amoskeag line early and often, but the visitors were up for the challenge until big Jamie Bouloux punched in for the first score of the day in the corner. In true Matt Venzin fashion, he launched a monster conversion from the sideline to split the uprights and put New York up 7-0. The battle for points was on and a to-and-fro mistake-filled ten minute session found both teams juggling the ball and making big tackles. New York put together punch after punch for the try line and were finally rewarded with a try by scrum half Ollie Vega that was unconverted. The referee started get impatient with the discipline for both teams at the sloppy breakdown area and sent fly half Walter Imo to the bin followed quickly by Amoskeags open side flanker. During the bin session, Matt Venzin's sure boot slotted a penalty kick to put NY up 15-0 at the half. Not happy with their first half performance, the lads of NY tried to regroup at the half time period, but, the visitors really made excellent changes and came out of the break on a mission to put points on the board. The next two scores were well worked by Amoskeag and New York really had to rely on their defensive structure to keep the lead. Tackle after tackle provided turn over ball that NY couldnt finish or turn into points. With ten minutes to go and a score of 15-12 in New York's favor a last ditch effort for victory occured with New York pressing the visitors line for most of the period. Another penatly kick by Captain Matt Venzin and a long kick off afterwards kept New York ahead for the final victorious score of 18-12. As a team they put together their best performance of the season with crisp execution of Coach Fautley’s system. On an individual level, a few devo players raised their hands to make the NRU semis and final 28 man squad. From the opening kickoff New York was intent on being the aggressor at every tackle and ruck. The players supported each other at the breakdown, picked and went in pairs at the fringes of the ruck and limited turnovers. After a solid scrum followed by well supported forward phases inside center Mike Von Borsig touched it down. Von Borsig drifted with Andy Keelaghan at fly half before cutting back on a switch to take the ball, straighten the line and catch the defender flat footed for his try. Von Borsig appears to be settling in at 12 and developing a rather devastating center partnership with vice captain Ryan McCue at 13. New York grew in confidence by that try as they continued to dominate play with a smothering organized defense and ferociousness at the ruck. New York was rewarded with a penalty that was nicely converted by full back Web Schelble. Amoskeag tried to attack the New York at the set pieces, where the visitors appeared to be strongest. One attempt to do so backfired as Amoskeag attempted to wheel a scrum, but heads up play from Scrumhalf Ryan Juliano saved the scrum for NY. Juliano picked the ball from the base of the scrum and drove hard for the line where he was met by Amoskeag defenders. However timely support came from 8 man Ross Connelly as he drove Juliano over the try line, conversion no good. At the half changes were made to ensure all Devo members would get a chance to demonstrate their grasp of the New York system of play. On his New York Devo debut, scrumhalf turned flyhalf Clement Leroux made all take notice of his French flair. After a short phase of play following the second half kickoff where the teams battled to a stalemate, New York Flanker John O’Brien charged onto a pass from Juilano at ruck and broke the gainline. After O’Brien broke the gain line he committed defenders and off-loaded to Leroux, who drifted right and ghosted through a small gap in the stretched Amoskeag defense. Leroux then fended off a defender then showed enough gas to make it to the in-goal area for 55 meter try. After that New York pressed for more tries but Amoskeag held firm and kept New York from adding to their points despite intense pressure. In a rare moment, Men’s team head coach Drew Faultley deemed that the man of the match should go to the whole devo team as the performance was so incredibly impressive. Devo Coach Junior Blaber said “Today was a complete effort because they matched their usual dedication and physicality with such intelligent play that showed total comprehension of all the drills and planning that occur in training.” New York 18 (13-00) 00 Amoskeag ‘B’ REFEREE: Fontaine LLOYD 15 Min 05-00 Try by Mike VON BORSIG 19 Min 08-00 Penalty by Web SCHELBLE 25 Min 13-00 Try by Ryan JULIANO Half Time 13-00 48 Min 18-00 Try by Clement LEROUX Full Time 18-00 Scorers VON BORSIG, Mike 5 points (1 Try) JULIANO, Ryan 5 points (1 Try) LEROUX, Clement 5 points (1 Try) SCHELBLE, Web 3 points (1 Penalty) 01 PEREZ-FOX, Prescott 02 LANZARA, Josh 03 SCHMALTZ, John 04 MOLA, Steve 05 REMMEL, Larry 06 O'BRIEN, John 07 MASTROGEORGIOU, Nick (c) 08 CONNELLY, Ross 09 JULIANO, Ryan 10 KEELAGHAN, Andy 11 MIZZONE, Casey 12 VON BORSIG, Mike 13 McCUE, Ryan 14 STERLING, Andrew 15 SCHELBLE, Web - Reserves - 40' GREEN, Brandon for REMMEL; DOMINGUEZ, Willie for STERLING; LEROUX, Clement for KEELAGHAN. 45' DIDIER, Sebastien for MASTROGEORGIOU; MITCHELL, Pete for SCHELBLE |
