After a tough weekend of games NYRC ended the season 3rd in the northeast and will go through to the Round of 32 in the Spring to play NOVA in D.C. More details form the NRU seeding tournament below.
Saturday November 21st 2009 @ 12:30pm vs Mystic River RFC Randall's Island South, Field 75 Weather: Sunny, Field: Turf NYRC came out of the gates slowly and allowed Mystic River to get up early. Defense around the fringes was poor early in the game and Mystic quickly put in two tries from their scrum half, before getting a thrid later in the game. Their back row was all over the park and was a key difference maker. Down 23-0 at the half a flat NYRC resolved to work a lot harder. They duly got back into the game as fly half Walt Imo drove to the line for a converted try. However, Mystic got a third try from their scrum half as the ball squirted out from an NYRC 5m scrum and he was quickest to punce on it. NYRC didn't quit though and although they made a raft of substitutions the intensity level didn't drop off. The second half ended 7-7 but a final score of 30-7 to Mystic River put them in the seeding final. In an extremely chippy game, which neither side felt the referee had control of, NYRC were much more aggressive coming out of the gate. The defensive line pushed up hard to meet attackers and our attacks came form depth with good support. Following good pahse play NYRC opened the scoring through a Badger Denehy try, converted by Matt Venzin. Denehy took a great unders line, through a gap created by the New Haven center shooting up in defense, to go over untouched. The second score came from a great hit by Ollie Vega. He must have been taking tackling lessons from resident Samoan Walt Imo and was probably too short for the New Haven fly half to see him coming. As he hit the fly half, who was attempting a kick, the ball was dislodged. Darcy Bowden scooped it up and raced into the 22 where he drew the fullback and gave an inside pass to Vega for the try. The second half wa sa real defensive battle and NYRC rose to the challenge. Several times they withstood New Haven pressure on the line to keep them out. It wasn't until the last play of the game when NYRC ran out of tired tacklers and allowed New Haven to put in an unconverted try. Despite the ending NYRC dogged out a gritty game to end the season tired, but jubilant, with a win.
