The New York Women go down in history as the first Women’s Premier League Champion, beating the Berkeley All-Blues 20-10.
Sunday proved to be sunny and warm, an environment for both teams to display their skills and put on an entertaining final. New York found themselves under pressure in the first few minutes of the game, weathering Berkeley attacks within their 22. Finally adjusting to the pace of the Berkeley side, New York managed to get on the board with a penalty converted by flyhalf Maura Weikman. Berkeley responded immediately, kicking off quickly and regaining possession, then scoring in the corner to bring the score to 5-3. Determined to attack, New York kept the ball in hand and sent it wide. Jenna Flateman found some space and chipped ahead, but was taken out late and high by a Berkeley defender, who was yellow-carded for the offense. New York went for a lineout off the penalty, and attacked deep into All-Blues territory. The ball moved out to the backs, and Maura Weikman dummied and skirted through the defense to score. The try went unconverted, but New York went into the half up 8-5. In the second half, New York continued to apply offensive pressure. Off a wheeling scrum, Phaidra Knight picked up a loose ball and forced her way over the try-line. Weikman converted for a 15-5 lead. Berkeley made another attack deep within New York territory, but a soft pass was picked off by fullback Laura Bilazarian, who took off with a Berkeley defender in hot pursuit. Bilazarian read her support well, and found Jenna Flateman racing up the left sideline. Flateman accelerated to leave the Berkeley defender in the dust, scoring an unconverted try that brought the scoreline to 20-5. With less than ten minutes left in the game, the All-Blues broke the New York defense to score a try that went unconverted, but 20-10 was as close as Berkeley would get. Maura Weikman led the team on the day with 10 points on a try, a conversion, and a penalty, while Phaidra Knight won MVP honors. New York celebrated their National Championship win with their large group of enthusiastic supporters, singing “New York, New York,” as well as the 2009 championship song, “Empire State of Mind.” |
